Akira are a young, three-piece dirty post-pop band from Cambridge.

They are composed out of Sarah (drums + violence) Gbenga (bass/vocals + stoicism) and Joel (guitar/vocals + insanity). They met in a car-crash on November 9th 2001 and have been said to sound like a mix between Mogwai, Coldplay and Nirvana. This is unintentional. They have been gigging in and around Cambridge and London for over a year and have supported bands as varied as Chikinki, Aereogramme, 22-20’s and Six By Seven. To date they have recorded two EP’s: ‘Demonstration’ and ‘Selections of Modern Music’. They have a large and dedicated local following and are well known on the Cambridge live band circuit.

Their website, which was launched in late 2003, to date has had over 2000 visits. Plus they recently became SCA Battle of the Band finalists and won the Cambridge APU Battle of the Bands.

Their influences include:
The Karate Kid, Philip K. Dick, The Chapman Brothers, Derrida, Battle of the Planets, Chaos Theory, Father John, Edward Thomas, Alan Moore, Jeremy Paxman, London Underground, David Fincher, Chris Morris, The American Dream and Jesus Christ.
