Ross Martyn is a singer songwriter from Cambridge. His music
is best described as "floating melodies and intricate guitars merge within
a soundscape of rhythmical mazes and organic strangitude".
Ross's musical journey began in 1998 when he co-founded the now mythical
band Fab Jansen along with Charlie Spencer and Tom Peters, with John
Rushton joining later. Ross and the band recorded a few sessions, playing
at first a few local gigs before venturing further afield. In 2001 Fab
Jansen played the Birmingham NEC music show as well as numerous shows in
London and Nottingham. Another recording session caught the eyes of a
couple of record companies, but unfortunately the band broke up in 2003 as
the various members followed individual pursuits.
Ross had been toying with the idea of becoming a solo artist for a while,
so this seemed the natural thing to do. Ross set about recording some
songs he had written and played a few gigs in Cambridge and Peterborough.
Although the songs were noted for their increasing maturity, Ross felt he
could do better and the recording quality was below par. Receptions at
gigs had been good though and one sound engineer said that Ross had the
best voice he had ever sound checked. On this wave of optimision Ross
began recording a new set of songs he had been working on. He had been
working on some electronic material during some long hazy nights with
singer Emma York, beatboxer Galactica and former Fab Jansen member John
Rushton (under the name Sim Sinergy) and Ross brought this minimalist
ambient style to his own work. This has seen him being described as "Nick
Drake jamming with Aphex Twin."
