Smiling Assassins are an original indie/alternative band based in Colchester, Essex

Early 2002 Vince (guitar) and James (bass) decided that their jamming sessions weren't enough, and that it was time to expand their ideas into a band that could really go places.  Singer and lyricist Graham was soon found, saved from local covers band hell, and together they recruited Ryan.  When these 4 men were put in a room together the energy and creativity that propels the SMILING ASSASSINS began to flow!

Indeed, Smiling Assassins felt ready to face their public after only 2 months!  This was a gig at the Twist in Colchester, where they debuted 9 songs to rapturous applause.  Since then, Smiling Assassins have gone from strength to strength, creating more songs, recording their "…and there was much rejoicing..." EP/demo and enticing in more fans! Smiling Assassins feel a passion for the music they play, the music they want to make. Fully focused and totally committed, this is a band that deserves to go places. They put in 100% of everything, time, energy, ideas, passion and commitment.

Smiling Assassins are not a band who is afraid to look critically and constructively at their songs. Indeed, many of their songs have been changed. The best example of this is "Hear Me Out"; the recorded version (if you are lucky enough to receive this version) has been extended, much to its benefit.

Their own promotional activities have seen demo requests from places as far flung as Greece, Canada and Australia. A number of e-mails suggest that Smiling Assassins have a small cult following in Australia!

February 2003 saw Holier Than Thou Records become the Assassins promotions agency, with “Anywhere” being featured on Matchbox Recordings compilation of unsigned talent and reaching number 1 on their play list chart. It also saw the sad departure of original drummer Ryan, who felt he could not put in the time and commitment needed by the rest of the band. Long-term friend of the band Alistair Cripps was asked to join, and the next phase of the band began.
