WitHiN
: "Insight" WitHiN, bring us four excellent tracks on this new cd. The duelling of Abi and Rich's vocals, like a kind of Alanis/4 nonBlondes vs Knopfler/Weller vocal duel, makes this band really stand out amongst the rest and when coupled with Huw Howes' excellent lyrics on "Wrap Me Safe" it makes you wonder why its taken so long to find a band like this, surely it has been done before, but probably not as well as this. "No Magic Man" has been receiving airplay but quite clearly the rest of the tracks are just as worthy. Highly recommended.

HOUSTON 500 : "Houston 500" Full on rock! "Arrested" is a pure masterpiece, with the drum intro and the guitar/police siren like effects about two mins into the track. On first play of the cd its clear that these guys know exactly how to make some great tracks and then know precisely how to rock. Their biography says to lock your daughters away - if i had one, she'd be locked away whilst i go to Houston 500 gigs. Geniuses. "Slide" is much slower but quite rightly so after the romp through the first two tracks ("Arrested" and "Dependence Day"). Don't be fooled though, its menacing enough to equal either of the first two. "Reborn", the final track, made me think of the Zep at first but very swiftly evolved into a massive chunk of rock. Look out for these guys in our forthcoming Band Agency nights at The Boat Race.

JEFF
: "The Last Meeting (Limited Edition)" Jeff, winners of numerous band competitions in their locality, and the bastard baby of Feeder, have put together this 5 track collection of rare demo versions and remixes of their songs. The first four tracks are straight forward Jeff-songs, great musicianship, emotive lyrics and Andrew's perfectly complementary vocals on "The Last Meeting", "Ugly", "I Wanna Be A Girl" and "The Stiltmen (Demo)". No Jeff fan could be at all disappointed. Then you move on to track five, which is an almost ambient remix of "Shadow" in which, although you can easily pick out Andrew's fantastic (and distorted) vocals, the track is purely electronic. It may be a completely different stance for the band but it is also very welcome addition to the Jeff back catalogue even if the packaging does remind me a little of the Spice Girls. |
