Alluvium began when Jon, Vegan and Android became friends at school. With nothing better to do in their final summer they began to jam a little together, originally calling themselves Errational Vendetta. Vegan had played guitar from an early age, following in the footsteps of his old man, who plays in a 60's covers band. Android had also played a little, and as another guitarist and singer Darren was also playing, Jon had little alternative but to pick up a bass. Though the four used to jam regularly, practices tended to consist of cheap, super strength lager consumption, Nirvana covers and smoking. Subsequently, the band was never taken seriously. This was until Darren got lost in a girlfriend and the other three began to wonder about forming a real band. Meanwhile, Paynie, a friend's brother, had recently begun taking drum lessons after his music teacher noticed his rhythm keeping talent. Before he had time to drool over his first Thunder drum kit, he got a call from Android asking if he was interested in having a jam. Paynie was up for it and the four had their first jam in his loft, playing Smells Like Teen Spirit what must have been well over 100 times. Stuck for a name, they decided on Alluvium, a word that Paynie had learnt in a geography lesson. It means the `deposit left by flood in rivers`. Well it DID sound good at the time! The debut gig was to be at the local cinema and was billed as a talent show with young dancers, little kids singing, and an audience full of perm bearing sixty-plusses. It went reasonably well and earnt them a write up in the local press. The future was set for Alluvium.
Four years on, the band has evolved into a strong unit of music and friendship. Vegan now shares the role of lead vocalist with Jon depending on the style of the song. Jon has a much deeper, louder and aggressive voice, good for rockier stuff with Vegan's higher pitched and softer voice being more suited to the soppier music. With Chris and Jon using what they learnt whilst at Uni, the band have found themselves producing demo's on Chris's 8-track recorder, as well as in the studio. The feeling in the band is that their sound is starting to come together and subsequently their belief in themselves is beginning to show. With a new promotions company (Phish Management) backing the boys the
band is now venturing into the London scene, with recent gigs including
The Bull and Gate, Dublin Castle and The Rock Garden. Not to mention
pushing demo's out to record labels. With a new demo now complete, the
lads feel that are ready to show the world that Alluvium is more than
just a muddy river.
